    About Scholarship

The Alabama Math and Science Teacher Education Program (AMSTEP) is a Federal Loan Repayment Program for qualifying math or science public high school teachers. This program has two components, the Base Program wherein new applicants' base loan repayment is three thousand seven hundred fifty dollars ($3,750) per semester worked, or $7,500 per year, and the Supplemental Program where there is an additional two thousand five hundred dollars ($2,500) per year, or one thousand two hundred fifty dollars ($1,250) per semester worked given that the recipients shall also teach math or science, or both, in a geographic area within the state with an acute teacher shortage in math or science, or both. To be eligible, students must be graduates of an ALSBE-approved math or science program after the spring term of 2018 and forward from that date, at the bachelor's or master's level, and obtain an initial secondary professional educator certificate endorsed in math or science from an approved institution. Students must hold a valid Alabama professional educator certificate endorsed in secondary math or science, or both, and be a full-time math or science teacher in an Alabama public school district or an approved charter school. Lastly, students must have outstanding federal student loans, whether subsidized or unsubsidized. Applicants must complete Section I of the AMSTEP Verification Reimbursement Form and take it to their System's Superintendent or Human Resource Officer for them to complete Section II. The school system will then forward the form to the Alabama State Department of Education to verify their credentials. Please visit the award's website for more information.
